Malacca Assam Laksa
October 19, 2009 at 10:25 am | Posted in Out of SG | Leave a commentTags: Assam Laksa
I was never a fan of Assam Laksa, at least, not the ones I tried in SG.
But we found this along Jonker Street in malacca town and it’s definitely the best I ever had!
It’s very different from what I had before…
Every mouthful is a terrific blend of all flavours…
Super Yummy !!!
I miss it sooooooooo much!
Malacca Cendol
October 15, 2009 at 11:29 am | Posted in Desserts, Out of SG | Leave a commentTags: cendol, chendol, malacca, melaka
I’m back from KL & Malacca!
Brought back tons of food pictures!!!
So……. the next few posts will definitely be on the super duper yummy food I had in Malaysia…
1st to introduce………
is The Malacca Cendol…
It’s 1 of the Must-Trys (other than chicken rice ball, lok-lok, assam laksa which will be posted up later… pls bear with me, i’m just too excited! )
We had it in this red building : 三叔公

I love the cute packagings…
you can simply hold and eat it on the streets and not afraid of dirtying your hands, dripping the sweet stuffs on your clothes (maybe not true for really clumsy ones) or having frosty hands from holding the cold container…
So thoughtful of them!
This is the Durian Cendol… super popular!
Once opened, there was a strong aroma and every mouthful was heavenly…
And the original flavour of Gula Melaka…
The taste of Gula Melaka was smooth and savoury… it’s OHSOGOOD!
I seldom take Cendol in SG… so I was abit dubious when I read so much good reviews on the forums about Malacca Cendol…
But I gotta trust them!
We had these after a long car journey and it was hot & sunny…
These 2 Cendols were just perfect!
*can’t stop drooling at the pictures*
Mellben (Toa Payoh)

The 1st outlet is at AMK and I have tried it 2yrs back.
This time, my friend suggested to patronise the outlet at Toa Payoh instead.
Remember to make reservations!
Creamy Butter crab!
Gravy is sooooo smooth and tasty!
Great to go with buns too…
Crab Bee Hoon…
ooooohhhh this is the ultimate!
The soup is thick and creamy and bursting with such strong flavours, you just can’t stop slurping up everything……..
金沙 crab…
One of their signatures….
Pretty similar to the creamy butter one… only that this has oat flakes
You wouldn’t believe 3 girls finished up everything ya?
The crabs were all so fresh and the soup/gravy drenched the white juicy meat with such perfect blend of flavours…
Every bite was madly savoury…
Crab lovers must try Mellben!
Menya Shinchan Japanese Noodle Restaurant

Location : 30 Robertson Quay, #01-05 Riverside View
By word of mouth, I found this quaint restaurant hidden in one of the alleys at Robertson Quay.
Interior gave me a very cozy, authentic feel…
One of the better ramens around
I’m sooooooo glad I found this ramen shop…
The noodles are super Q, soup base is thick and bursting with flavours…
I wasn’t very adventurous on this first visit, so to be on the safe side, I ordered the usual pork base soup…
They do have a variety of choices… I may try the seafood base on the next visit!
I also heard that the cold ramen is really good too
Most importantly, it’s not very expensive either!

Thanks WaiWai for the birthday present!
Lots of cute bento tools!

Cream cheese and Crabstick fillings in between

But why mine looks so different?
Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant (百龄麦旋转酒楼)

Mummy wanted to give me a birthday treat and told me to go think of what I would like to have.
After shortlisting a few restaurants, I decided to have some simple Chinese dishes at Prima Tower – a revolving restaurant.
Not sure if it was due to the public holiday, they only accept reservations before 12pm. So I did make a reservation for 4 of us but we arrived quite early at 11.15am. Surprisingly, by 12.30pm, the restaurant was full and there was a queue outside. Though it’s hidden in a factory site, it seems pretty well-known to food lovers.
Pretty old-fashioned kind of restaurant…
That’s what I like about it… brings back memories too
老火例汤
The soup of the day is 火腿冬瓜汤
It looks pretty plain but the soup is refreshing yet flavoursome.
The winter melon cubes are surprisingly crunchy!
铁板红鱼
Steamed Red Tilapia on Hot Plate
Extremely fresh fish that seems to melt in your mouth!
炒沙律虾球
Sautéed Salad Prawn Balls
The prawn balls are pretty huge but too few for us…
I want more!
Seemed to have constant cravings for Peking duck after the ones I tried at ION.
On hindsight, although they tasted very good… but they weren’t that authentic.
烤北京填鸭
Authentic Barbecued Peking Duck
I was very pleased that this signature dish was included in the set meal.
This is much more authentic than the ones at ION.
See, this has only the skin of the duck while the ones at ION included meat too.
And of course, you have to add in the spring onions and cucumber!
Yummy x 100 !
红烧海参鲜菇
Braised Sea Cucumber with Shiitake
The sea cucumber was very clean and ‘Q’…
Dad said these were of good quality…
蟹扒时蔬
Sautéed Seasonal Vegetables with Crab Meat
I didn’t expect that there would be so much crab meat
(some restaurants stinge on the gravy)
We asked for the leftover duck meat from the Peking duck to be cooked with noodles.
This is pretty average actually… But we had to ‘use up’ the duck meat anyway…
豆沙锅饼
Red Bean Pancakes
Dad insisted that we should order this as desserts…
Supposed to be one of their signatures I think
What we had above was from their set menu for 4 persons – excluding the noodles & desserts.
It was a really fantastic meal and I’m so glad I made a right choice.
Don’t forget this is a revolving restaurant, so we were constantly turning (at a slow speed of course) and enjoying the view outside.
Thanks Daddy & Mummy for the wonderful meal!
BYOL 50 : Caterpillar Bento

Took a pretty long break cos’ I have been eating out with colleagues and friends alot recently…
Finally back to bento making again…
Angel hair pasta mixed with olive oil, kewpie mayo then sprinkled with salt & pepper…
The strawberries in stores are huge so I could easily used my heart shaped cutters on them
Lontong

Every year on Hari Raya, my lovely Malay neighbours will share with my family some of their homecook food.
My personal favourite is this :
Lontong topped with chilli prawns!
Marvellious!
Modern Peking Duck

And so you thought only restaurants serve Peking ducks?
Nah… Look at what I found at ION basement…
And you don’t have to order an entire duck

We were really impressed with the lady skinning the duck.
Fast and skilful!
Look at all the ‘skinn-ed’ ducks at the side… Business must be really good eh?
Meat is smooth and tender… as though it will melt in your mouth…
It’s really really that good…
The Daily Scoop

After the feast of Udders ice cream a few weeks ago. See here
We decided to have another round… again…
But this time, SKL bought the ice cream from The Daily Scoop.
Surprising Coconut
Kookie Monster
Lychee Martini
Strawberry Shortcake
Nutty Macademia
Look at everyone digging into the tubs…
Each of us have our own favourite flavour…
I personally like the strawberry shortcake one alot…
But most of us agree that the Kookie Monster paled in comparison to the one from Udders…
Overall, thumbs up to the ice cream feast once again!

I decided not to be so kiam siap with my free space so I uploaded pictures of bigger size…
Just click on the photos if you want to see a larger image
Great for wine lovers… Great selection!
I ordered a Lychee Mint soda… very refreshing! I like!
Don’t have the exact name, but it’s topped with prawns & Soft shell crabs
Beer battered fish & chips…
I like that it was served on a piece of newspaper… the UK tradition!
Rigatoni with Wagyu beef balls
Country style roasted baby back ribs
And I ordered the Cripsy duck confit
Sad to say, the food failed to impress us…
The duck meat, ribs, pizza and even the dips seemed a tad too saltish for our taste.
On the contary, the fish & chips was too bland.
Nevertheless, it’s quite a unique place to dine at…
I like the ambience of the restaurant.
Quiet and cozy….
Thanks to SKL & SY for the pre-bday dinner!

Thanks to my JC mates for my pre-bday dinner!

The spread of food…

The desserts section…

A little of everything from the cold sides…

And a little of everything from the main dishes…

Herbal black chicken soup…

Chowder… Too thick and the croutons are not cripsy at all (‘lao hong’)!

Laksa was pretty good actually! ![]()

Salmon is very fresh! Can’t help to take a 2nd helping…
Appreciate the assortment of cheese too ![]()

Looks really good… but a huge dissapointment…
They aren’t fresh ![]()

Durian mousse (or paste?)… my friend loves this!

And… durian cake

Bread pudding that’s way too hard… and fondue…
I didn’t actually take a lot of food cos’ I wasn’t very hungry…
Overall, it’s a pretty good spread for its price…
But I felt that the food was just pretty average…
川味人家

Location : 17 Mosque Street
I love SiChuan cusine… mainly cos’ of the spice and strong flavours…
Met up with my ex-colleagues last week and they brought me to this restaurant along Mosque Street…

Do what the Chinese do…

红油肚丝
This is the 1st time I tried this dish…
Fantastic! The pig stomach was sliced so thinly and they fully absorbed all the flavours…

蒜泥白肉
One of my Must-Orders from a Sichuan restaurant
Perfectly sliced pork with bursting flavours…

干扁四季豆
This dish in most Sichuan restuarants aren’t that spicy (even though they looked so)
But this is the spiciest 干扁四季豆 I ever had… And it’s awfully good!

东北拉皮
I wanted to order the 凉粉 but my friends insisted that I should try this
Very appetizing… no regrets!

回锅肉
Thinly sliced pork… with a proportionate layer of meat & fats…
Tender and wholesome in taste… Yummilicious!

鲍汁娃娃菜
Oh well, this is the only dish that isn’t spicy
(or maybe there is a tinge, but I couldn’t feel it after eating the others… haha)
We ordered this just so that not all our dishes are spicy…

辣子鸡
Oh this is really good!
Some of the 辣子鸡 I tried were too tough and lack of flavour…
This one here is cripsy and savoury!

水煮鱼
Can you see hot big the pot is ?!
There are plenty of fresh fish slices and 宽粉…
But there are bones to the fish and I didn’t really like that…

孜然肉片
Personally, I feel this is just an average dish…
Also probably cos’ I kept biting on the spices
According to my friends, the food is very authentic…
However, if you are not a fan of oily, spicy SiChuan dishes… you probably will not enjoy as much as I did…
I am already missing the food and I will want to re-visit this place again…
In fact, I can’t stop browsing the pictures I took and drool over them…
PS. Cafe @ Dempsey

Website : http://www.pscafe.sg/
We love the cheese platter served at PS Cafe…
But we had a really filling dinner and had no more space for wine and cheese…

Specials of the day scribbled on one of the walls…

PS. Fish & Chips
I’m not a big fan of fish n chips…
But after trying a small piece, I asked for more ![]()
It comes with 2 dips – tartar sauce and kaffir lime aioli

Flamed Prawn Tortiglioni
The cream sauce is pretty light but I felt that the pasta was abit overcooked.
Seafood was really fresh and tangy though!

White Choc Coffee Brownie
This dessert caught our eye at the counter and we just had to try it…
However, we felt it’s way tooooo sweeet for our liking…
Nice ambience, friendly staff…
Will still go back for wine and cheese…
Udders Ice Cream

Rum Rum Raisin
Mao Shan Wang Durian
Earl Grey
Pure Pistachio
Cookies and Cream

A rather pathetic attempt to capture the contents… Everyone was digging into them!
My favourite will be the Earl Grey one…
It has a very unique, refreshing taste!
Most of them like the cookies and cream…
The big chunks of Oreo cookies in the ice cream are absolutely satisfying…
Durian lovers will definitely enjoy the 猫山王 flavour…
Smooth, rich and luscious!
Terribly sinful yet I’m craving for more already…… awwwww…
